Hosch and Doner Join 10 Other Players with Multiple Kirkwood Trophy Wins.by Dave Grubbs HISTORY: The Kirkwood Trophy was established in 1966 to honor
the bridge player in D19 (Washington, British Columbia and Alaska) who
did the best during each calendar year thereafter. For the first few
years it was awarded to the player from District 19 who won the most
points without regard to what tournaments were included. However, when
the District welcomed World Champion Paul Soloway as a resident of Washington
State, it was soon decided that the trophy should be awarded based solely
on performances at D19 Regionals. Otherwise our world champion would
likely be the perennial winner thereby defeating the nature and intent
of the competition. With that change there has been a wide group of
players competing for and winning Kirkwood Trophy honors. There are
now 12 who have won it two or more times. Hosch, current holder of the trophy (click
here for 2004 Overall List), won the trophy for best performances
in 2001 and 2004. Cameron Doner won the trophy for his best performances
in 2002 and 2003. They join 7 other former 2 time winners: Gard Hayes,
George Steiner (deceased), Kenneth Gorfkle, Allan Graves, John Shermer,
Bruce Ferguson and Miles Adkins.
