BC UNIT 430
1,097 Members
Unit 430 covers the Greater Vancouver area, including the Fraser
Valley east to Hope, the Sunshine Coast, and the Howe Sound to Whistler.
See here
for a list of clubs in Unit 430 area. The Executive Board of Unit
430 promotes bridge by organizing tournaments, coordinating ACBL
special events with local bridge clubs, producing an informative
newsletter (the Matchpointer) for its members, and running monthly
Unit championship games and the popular IMP League, an annual contest
every winter of team-of-four play, with matches played once every
two to three weeks. Unit 430 also runs several rookie master games,
and future stars events per year, targetting the newer players.
In honor of one of our most senior members we also run the Ev Hodge
charity fundraiser. This consists of a pot luck supper, and an evening
of bridge. Proceeds go to a designated local charity.
The MatchpointerClick Here -->>. is Unit 430's newsletter. One
thousand copies are printed in a letter digest, running to about
24-36 pages, three times a year, and distributed to local bridge
clubs where players pick them up for free. Issues appear in early
March, late May, and mid November. Issues normally include several
feature articles, an interview with a local player, a middle section
for club news called the "Club News Yellow Pages," and
an information section containing winner's lists, details on tournaments,
special events, and Monthly Unit Games. Copies of the Matchpointer
are sent to the Vancouver Public Library, which houses issues dating
back nearly thirty years. Current editor is Ben Takemori. There
is also an online copy of some of the articles here.
In recent years more emphasis has been put on the online content,
which contains articles which have not appeared in the printed version
for lack of space.
Unit 430 runs seven sectional tournaments every
year. Four of these are the familiar weekend tournaments: the Trophy
Sectional in late January, the Spring Sectional in late Spring (Victoria
Day weekend), the Evergreen Sectional in early September, and the
Round-Up Sectional in early November. The fifth and sixth sectionals
are the spring and fall Future Stars Sectionals restricted to players
with less than 300 masterpoints. The seventh sectional is the District
wide Sectional Tournament at Clubs. The STaC attracts players to
their local clubs to play in sectionally-rated events for silver
points without having to attend a sectional tournament. Unit 430
invites all clubs in District 19 to particpate and large overall
awards are available for each session, Monday to Sunday, day games
or evening gmaes. In effort to promote the STaC, the Unit subsidizes
the sanction fees for the particpating clubs.
Four trophies exist for the annual masterpoint
race. The overall leader in masterpoints at Unit 430 Sectionals
(not including the Future Stars or the STaC) wins the Phil Wood
Trophy. The Edith Bonnell Trophy is awarded to the woman who wins
the most masterpoints over the course of the four tournaments. The
Phil Wood Under 200 Trophy is awarded to the player amassing the
most masterpoints at the four sectionals who began the calendar
year with less than 200 masterpoints. The Leo Steil Trophy is awarded
to the senior player (over 65) who wins the most masterpoints in
the four sectionals. (This trophy is often not claimed!)
The winners for 2010 are:
Phil Wood Trophy (masterpoints
won at open sectionals): Jack Lee
Edie Bonnell Trophy (masterpoints won at open sectionals by women):
Julie Smith
Phil Wood Under 200 Trophy (masterpoints won at open sectionals
by under 200 players): Diana Jing
Leo Steil Trophy (masterpoints won at open sectionals by people
over 65): Kathy Adachi
There are also many other trophies awarded for winning the IMP
league, the Monthly Unit Games, etc. see here
for a complete list of 2011 performances.

The first thing on arrival on this site you are told when you arrived
and what time it is in Vancouver. Then you are shown today and tomorrow's
usual games - the whole schedule is available with a click or two.
Games of particular interest to novices are highlighted. There are
results galore. A special feature is The Percentage Line
a contest, with free plays, on card play. - This site has not been
updated since 1999. However, the scheduling and day seem automated
and accurate.

A nice cleanly designed site. Check out the education links. Results
are posted within hours. Quote: 'We are the only ACBL sanctioned
day game in the South Surrey/White Rock area. We currently average
14+ tables each week and draw on a database of over 100 regular
players. Our membership draws from existing ACBL members as well
as from many local non-sanctioned clubs. Many of these players enjoy
our friendly atmosphere' PeaceArch
